Psalms – a prayerful psalm

Martyn Payne

On your marks:

Psalm 25 is a beautiful Psalm of trust when things are hard. It is not difficult to imagine the circumstances, which may have produced this Psalm. David was hiding out in the wilderness again, having escaped from King Saul. In his dark cave all he has is the flickering light of a candle for comfort. No wonder he begins to associate the candle light with God himself – a God who has rescued David before and will do so again. As David holds on to this truth, he can cope with the fear that is threatening to overwhelm him.

Get set:

This version of Psalm 25 would work as a final prayer with a group after a session with the psalms. Light a candle and invite the children to imagine sitting in a cave on the mountainside with David. This candle becomes a focus for his faith and his prayers.

Teach the chorus of the prayer to the children, which they should say together between the verses of the prayer.

Go!

Here is a version of Psalm 25

(Chorus):
The Lord is my Light and he rescues me.
I shall not be afraid

He holds my life together
He keeps me fearless when others try to get me down
Chorus

Being near him is the most important thing in my life
He will shelter me when times are rough
Chorus

He will put me in a safe place
I give him all the praise I can
Chorus

He wants me to come close to him
I want to come close to God
Chorus

Never leave me but bring me safe to heaven
Teach me the way I should go
Chorus

You promise good things to me here-and-now
I will wait for God who is my strength
Chorus
