In addition to publishing resources and running RE Days in school for learners, Barnabas also offers INSET sessions for teachers to equip them to deliver Christianity creatively within the RE curriculum for Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. There is also the opportunity to include within the INSET programme an element of 'Quiet Spaces' – an enriching and enjoyable time for the staff to be still and reflect on wider questions than day-to-day teaching.
An INSET session lasts two hours, with the option to run two sessions on one day.
Following discussion with the Barnabas team co-ordinator and the individual Barnabas team member who will be leading the INSET, a session may combine elements from more than one of the following outlines. To talk this through further, contact the Barnabas team co-ordinator on 01865 319704.

Using tried and tested drama techniques can give your RE teaching a new lease of life. Drama is an ideal way for children to enter imaginatively into the world of the Bible, experience what the characters might have felt, and learn through activities what their conflicts, decisions and dilemmas meant then and might mean today. Drama, presented sensitively, is also great fun. This training session is bulging with ideas, and gives you a chance to try out plenty of new games and strategies for yourself.
The Bible is a rich source of stories, which not only entertain but are also an ideal teaching medium. How can we tell these stories effectively to a media-conditioned generation? How can we help children to reflect on them, own them and learn from them? This session will introduce you to an exciting range of interactive ways to tell a story, to lift it from the page of a book and bring it to life.
Collective Worship in the primary school should be an occasion to look forward to. This session will offer suggestions for putting across your story or thought in a way that will hold the children’s attention. From having fun with stories to making a space for silence, reflection and prayer, this session aims to inspire you for when it’s your turn on the rota!
Christianity has inspired some the world's most famous pieces of art in a variety of media. Using paintings, icons and drawings from this country and across the world, which connect with Bible stories, the sessions will look at ways in which these visual representations can enable children to explore issues of spirituality, with the use of wondering questions, imaginative discussion and a creative response. The session will also look into how art can more generally help schools resource spiritual development across the curriculum.
Many teachers feel that they don’t really know enough about the Bible and are understandably uncertain how to handle this sacred book with their children in the classroom. This session will address this issue, exploring the sort of book it is, the library of its contents, its variety of literary genres, the different ways it is regarded as special by Christians and how its truths are applied in contemporary Christian life and worship. There will also be an opportunity to experience a variety of approaches to handling its stories and of helping children to make their own discoveries of meaning from its pages.
This session will provide a time of guided reflection for teachers, based on Bible stories, with space for groups and for individual response. It is an opportunity to sit back, reflect on the wider questions in a Christian context and benefit from regaining a sense of perspective on the everyday. This could be a session within a training day, a stand-alone session or a whole day event.
